I think the key to this point is 'experience'. Younger designers are more likely to come from an exploratory college or university course background, while some of us that have been doing corporate design for years will probably agree that an awful lot of time can be wasted in creating 'other' ideas, just to please somebody in management *gripe.

Quite right. :)

I was hoping people would realise that I don't mean the first idea, regardless of if it is bad, cliche or just poor. Im refering to the 'first idea' that you personally feel hits the mark, and sometimes, reading the brief generates the seeds for this...

As with anything, its open to interpretation and debate... just pointing that in some cases, the first idea is the right idea, regardless of how many other versions and concepts you come up with. :)

Good observations/points. However, I would argue that the first idea in some contexts is the one you DO NOT want to pursue.

For example, in one of my design classes we had a project to come up with 20 different directions for a "Tempus Fugit" (time flies) logo/graphic. At the critique, literally EVERYBODY's first drawing was a stupid fucking clock with wings on it. I'm guilty of thinking the same thing first during my brainstorming but immediately dismissed it as cliche/vein/shallow/too "see-say"/whatever. I enjoyed being the only one without a dumb flying clock, and it forced me to really explore the problem (phases of the moon/zodiac, 4th dimension, space/time).

But as you pointed out, the first idea ALWAYS has the essence of the final product embedded in it somewhere.
