I was drawn to the work of Sasha Prood by way of DoobyBrain which initially showed some of the amazing watercolour typography work, but I then noticed on Sasha's portfolio the intricate watercolour logo work.

La Buena Foods (above) is particularly beautiful. Hiring Sasha Prood would be one way to guarantee a level of uniqueness not generally found in pure digitally created identity design.

ImJustCreative Cartoon

Had to share this. Commissioned this cartoon illustration of moi for my freelance business, prior to ImJustCreative. At this time, I was going by the name of DigitalSlave and was a multi-disciplined freelance designer.

When I hired the illustrator, my only requirements were that it had a retro Flash Gordon feel in terms of the computer equipment. Now bear in mind, this was over ten years ago now, so flat screen LCD's were not exactly common place, certainly pre flat screen iMac. So it held more visual appeal to the retro future so to speak.

Even with flat screen monitors common place, this illustration still captures the very essence of what I wanted. And the expression on my face has not changed, frequently work with this 'death stare'.

Tempted to find a new use for this, as I still have mad hair.




George Michael Portrait Illustration

George Michael - Faith

As with my previous portrait pencil illustrations, Kate Bush, Hannibal Lectar and Elvis Presely, this one of George Michael was copied from a photo, in this case, a record sleeve (yes, not CD, a record) from the "Faith" album.

I loved the general moodiness and darkness of this portrait, but translating that level of darkness and shadow into pencil can sometime be a bit tricky. The challenging part of this illustration was the eye area. Creating it so that you could imagine the eye being in there, and allowing the mind to actually see it, when it's not actually there. I know it should be there obviously, because that is where eye's usually go, but in terms of filling in the pieces.

So the surrounding features had to be reproduced almost 'identically' to the photo to pull it off. I did have to go through more than several tries to get it looking right. Patience as always is somewhat of a virtue when drawing.

As with the other illustrations, a combination of charcoal, Indian ink and the full range of pencil weights were used to pull this one off.

Some TLC

As with all my original drawings, many have seen better days.There has been a slight use of Photoshop in this version. As these were drawn some years ago, the original sheets have become slightly soiled, the odd crease and pencil marks being worn away. Not to mention light fade. So a high resolution scan then some retouching to bring it back to close to how it originally looked before the soft 'B' pencil marks were rubbed and faded away. I have really boosted the shadow areas in this version, but the pencil marks in the mid-tones and highlight areas still very much visible.

Kate Bush

As with my previous portrait illustrations, Hannibal Lectar and Elvis Presely, this was copied from a photo, in this case, a record sleeve.

This was one of the most intricate and time consuming portraits completed. Kate's long hair proved to be the culprit for eating huge chunks out of my evening. Not sure it was the best route to take, but I just used a hard 'H3' pencil and press quite hard to draw lots of fine lines, then went over with a softer 'B' range pencil to create the various shades of grey and black. Then used a rubber to create subtle highlights. Not being taught art at college, it was all just the best way at the time.

In terms of impact, this is a real fav of mine. It was an earlier portrait, so before some of my other attempts where I had picked up a few methods to improve overall feel. But even so, still a winner for me.

Elvis Presley Portrait Illustration

A lost art

I really enjoyed doing these portraits, especially this Elvis Presley Portrait, something about it was so relaxing and mellow.

Sadly I don't seem to be able to have the time on my hands to really sit down and spend the hours it would take me to complete my illustrations.

People often mentioned I should take my skills to the street.

A little bit in practical in reality. I have the utmost respect for these street artists, especially the portrait ones who can do them in a fraction of the time I can do mine.

Elvis Presley

As with the Hannibal Lecter Portrait, Elvis was copied from a photograph. In fact, in this case, it was taken from a Best of Elvis compilation double album. Boy, I loved listening to this album when I was in my teen's, rock on.

I loved the pose for this particular cover shot of Elvis Presley's Portrait, seemed to be the right mix of attitude. I didn't want anything cheesy, smiley just Elvis gazing off into the distance. Also loved the 'almost frown' going on here, and the eye's just slightly in shadow.

Turned out really well, well, I was pleased anyway. As with most of my drawings, I could not tell you how long exactly it took, but many hours, certainly around the 20 hour mark.

A lost art

Sadly I don't seem to be able to have the time on my hands to really sit down and spend the hours it would take me to complete my illustrations.

This one is one of my favourites and must of took 20 hours or so. Not that I was counting, but I would obsess over detail and quite often get so far, erased too much and too often and would start over again. All until I was happy in myself that it resembled a face and not some horrid warped mistake.

If I had a penny for every time someone suggested I should take this into the street and offer the street portraits, I would be rather well off. Fact is, I was just slow. No way could I create anything remotely decent in the time these portraits artists knock out their unique art.

Hannibal Lecture

This was copied from a poster and I would just get my pad, lay down on my bed with the original propped up against the wall and start sketching. Not the ideal bodily position I'm sure, but it worked for me. I did try desks, art tables, but the more natural laying down position seemed to be more helpful and comfortable.

The eyes certainly came out a little larger than intended, but I was more than happy to let that go as for me, it sort of added to the potential terror that Hannibal oozed. Those big evil eyes just boring dark endless shafts into your soul.
