"No. I don't make free logo designs" Poster

Yesterday I received a Tweet that just really irked me. Someone just came out and asked me if I 'made' free logo designs, and if I would, could I DM them.

I think anyone that knows me, or knows of me a little bit, would know that this is the sort of thing that 'fires me up', and provides me a little fun with a return salvo.

Even if you don't know me, it would seem common sense that asking such a question is just pretty rude, and disrespectful.

Sure, you never know unless you ask, but if what you are asking is stupid, then you must also expect some kind of reply that will probably not be to your own liking.

I replied to that tweet with this, which I felt was pretty straight talking for me:

Then I read it a few times and it reminded me of a poster I designed a few years back: No. I don't design logos. I pull them out of my ass, and I felt there was some more mileage to get out of that poster format.

Download 'No Free Logo Designs' Graphic Design Poster

So here we are: a revised version of the 'ass poster' still typeset in Helvetica, now targeting anyone who'd dare ask for a 'free logo design'.

I love graphic design; oh the freedom.

Feel free to download and print it etc.

The ZIP file contains: PDF & editable Adobe Illustrator .ai files in case you want to change the colours, but please don't remove my name and details from the bottom. Ta.

There really isn't anything that is safe from being Helverticarised: we've had a whole variety of Helvetica themed goodies in the past, from the Helvetica BikeHelvetica The Perfume: "The Scent of Nothing", the gorgeous Helvetica Moleskines, Helvetica Wine (designed by WildWildWeb), and a crap load of other Helvetica themed items.

The latest item to be branded with Helvetica? The humble wrist watch, although in this case a very non-humble watch by Mondiane.

Mondaine is known to many as the official timekeeper of the Swiss Railway system—who are currently working on the The Helvetica Watch, also known as the No.1.

The images above are actually renders, but the word is the No.1 Helvetica watches are very real, and will be available for purchase around September.

The No. 1 Helvetica White Face Watch by Mondaine

The Helvetica No 1 Watch Styles

The Helvetica No. 1 Watch by Mondaine will come in five different case sizes, and in three different font weight classes: Light (26 and 38mm), Regular (33 and 40mm) and Bold (43mm). But that's not it, there are further style variations based on several styles of steel case, including: black, gold and PVD as well as several strap options.

5 Phrases Of Massimo Vignelli: 'Vignelli Forever' Set in Helvetica

Gorgeous set of posters, entitled: Vignelli Forever, by Anthony Neil Dart using Helvetica, of course!. Anthony has designed one main poster summing up five well-known phrases, and quotes, by Massimo Vignelli, then a further five posters each displaying one of the five phrases.

These have been floating around for a few years now, but really do like them and felt another airing would be worthwhile. Decided to keep the jpg files as high-resolution as possible, rather than downsampling, to keep the pretty small fine-print as legible as possible. Let's see how well MaxCDN, CloudFlare, W3 Cache and BJ Easy Load work together to reduce this pages download speed/size!

I'd really like to get my hands on a set of these, they look so smart! The Vignelli Forever posters were originally found via AdWeek, in their Talent Gallery.

The five Massimo Vignelli phrases are:

  1. One life is too short for doing everything.
  2. We like design to be visually powerful, intellectually elegant and above all timeless.
  3. If you can design one thing, then you can design everything.
  4. If you do it right, it will last forever.
  5. The life of a designer is a life of fight against the ugliness.

Helvetica Wine Bottle: A Sans-Serif Wine

This has just made my Friday! Thanks to Kris Kolvin for letting me know about this beauty. We've had a whole variety of Helvetica themed goodies in the past, from the Helvetica BikeHelvetica The Perfume: "The Scent of Nothing", the gorgeous Helvetica Moleskines and a crap load of other Helvetica themed items.

Now we have Helvetica Wine, designed by WildWildWeb based in Spain. This is a thing of beautify with carefully designed details down to the stamped 'Helvetica Wine' wax sealed cork with the Helvetica alphabet printed around the corks side. The typography on the bottle is gorgeous, but that wax sealed cork sealed it for me…

Buy Your Own Bottle of Vintage Helvetica Bold 75

The Helvetica Wine bottle is not just a concept, oh no no no.

You can buy a bottle of this fine sans-serif wine from Vinorama, for a refreshing €9.25. It's a limited edition run, with 1300 bottles being filled and silkscreened.

Bodegas Barreda: Led by Vinorama, Torre de Barreda (one of the best wineries in Castilla La Mancha) and the design studio wildwildweb born this tribute to the queen of fonts: Helvetica ®, developed by Max Miedinger and Edouard Hoffmann in 1957.

Helvetica ® Wine has been careful preparation, the process from grape to bottle design, which makes it a premium wine along with an undisputed design element.

Tasting Notes

"Read" Typographic Poster Designed by AMVBBDO

Seen this very cool typographic poster for the typemusueam.org floating around the interwebs for a while. Never seen a 'quality' version of it, with each instance of it used being.JPEG'd and progressively degraded each time it's shared, uploaded, resaved etc.

Did some digging around, in the hope of finding a larger and cleaner version of this typographic poster, but alas nothing.

However, I was able to narrow down that this was designed by AMVBBDO (Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO), a print advertisement back in 2005 for the typemusuem.org

Couldn't locate any mention of it on Abbott's website, which is a shame. It's probably been long relegated to the archives :(

I Recreated A New Version in Helvetica

I decided to whip-up a reasonably accurate facsimile of the poster, but using Helvetica.

I will say it was really tough typing out that sentence; my brain kept wanting to correct the spelling, and was much harder than I thought to just read, and type, one letter at a time.

My brain really didn't like doing that. Give it a go…

Brooklyn Bridge Letterpress Poster designed by Cameron Moll

Brooklyn Bridge Letterpress Type Poster - Limited Edition (1,500 copies)

Shortly after publishing the Helvetica, Futura and Garamond Typeface Illustrations post yesterday, and referencing some older typographic work by Cameron Moll, I didn't realise that Cameron has just finished his latest masterpiece: the Brooklyn Bridge Letterpress Type Poster.

This was initially a Kickstarter project which, no surprise, easily reached and surpassed it's funding goal of $10,000 with $64,597 pledged. The Brooklyn Bridge Letterpress Type Poster was funded on the 9th November, 2014, and the last consignment was dispatched mid-April, 2014.

So, along with with Colosseo Letterpress Poster, and the Salt Lake Temple Letterpress Poster there is this magnificent Brooklyn Bridge Poster, which consists only of type.

Cameron Moll: "The artwork is designed in Illustrator, and it's incredibly tedious. Some sections can be copied and pasted, but 70-80% of the characters you see in the artwork are positioned, sized, and rotated one by one. I generally can do only an hour at a time, as my eyes (and brain) go bonkers if I stretch it out any longer."

The photograph below, taken by Cameron, was used as the foundation for the poster.

Hidden Names

If you view the Kickstarter project page you'll also see how Cameron carefully worked various meaningful names (above), including his own signature, into the Brooklyn poster, which is cool.

The Misspelling of Brookyln

There is a nightmare of a story linked to this project, which leaves one feeling extremely gutted for Cameron. You can read the story over on Kickstarter. Also worth reading the comments to see how different people felt about the situation at the time. I like to think I would have been cool with it, and would have accepted whatever Cameron decided to do, but certainly some people were not so forgiving. Hard one to call…

Buy Your Own Brooklyn Bridge Letterpress Type Poster

I believe you can still purchase the poster direct from Cameron's website, for $120: PRE-ORDER: Brooklyn Bridge 24"x16" Letterpress Poster

The poster is letterpress printed on Crane Lettra Pearl, with the ink colours carefully selected to match the granite and limestone used to construct the bridge.

Typeface Illustrations designed by POP and Pär Ågren 1

Typeface Illustrations designed by POP and Pär Ågren

These lovely typeface illustrations, designed by POP and Pär Ågren, remind me a little bit (in a much smaller scale) of the fantastic typographic illustrations that Cameron Mall designed, such as the Coliseum and Salt Like Temple typographic posters, a few years back. Cameron's work is an altogether different league when it comes to sheer scale and intricacy, but I still very much like the work by POP and Pär Ågren.

Most of you know I do have quite the soft-spot for Helvetica, so it's no coincidence that the implementation of modern high-rise architecture in the Helvetica poster, gets my vote. The Garamond poster comes in 2nd, with Futura coming 3rd.

Typographic Prints for Sale

These 3 typographic illustrations: Garamond, Futura and Helvetica,  are sold in poster format from Nordic Design Collective, for €55.15 per print. Each print measures 50x70cm (18x28"), and do not come with a frame.

Helvetica Lager designed by Sasha Kischenko

Helvetica Stout designed by Sasha Kischenko

Helvetica Beer designed by Sasha Kischenko

This Helvetica Beer, Stout and Lager Cans project, designed by Sasha Kischenko, has been around a while, but it seemed to have slipped me by. Which bothers me…

There is hardly nothing on this earth that I wouldn't mind, actually love, to see an alternative Helvetica version of. We have had the Helvetica Bike and Helvetica The Perfume: "The Scent of Nothing", the gorgeous Helvetica Moleskines and a crap load of other Helvetica themed items.

I do really like this Helvetica beer, stout and lager can project though.

So given I'm not so much a larger drinker, I would be thinking it would be pretty neat to see a Helvetica Cider done? Anyone?

Helvetica-Moleskine-Notebook-5

So here it is, The Helvetica Moleskine Christmas Giveaway has finally landed! I've been hanging on to these for a good few years now in the hope I might round to actually using them, but haven't been able to bring myself to tear off the protective cellophane.

(Whilst you're here: don't forget to enter my other Christmas Giveaway for the rather cool, and useful: Slat Mobile Airdesk

So rather hanging onto these beautiful notebooks, I've decided to give' em away (whilst still holding onto one black and one red Helvetica Moleskine for myself).

I have two black and one Red Helvetica Moleskine's up-for-grabs, with two runner up prizes of Type Trumps.
