SlopeJunki.es Brand and Logo - IncSpring Example Vol 1

Since IncSpring came onto the scene, I have been really excited about the possibility of being in total control of a ‘mini’ branding and logo project. No restraints, no restrictions, no client demands whatsoever. Just harnessing the power of imagination to create something memorable from scratch.
I have submitted a couple of logos to IncSpring, but both were ‘failed’ logo attempts for other projects, with SlopeJunki.es, the whole process was geared towards IncSpring.
THE BRIEF
So the brief I gave myself was to create a cool and stylish clothing and accessory brand for snowing and skiing. To design a brand that could have a web based or a physical presence, selling ski and board equipment. The logomark also needed to be easily reproduced on fabrics, hard and soft materials, generally a very versatile mark.
By not specifying any specifics, like snow, it could infact be used as a seasonal logo, showing a bluish logo for winter season, then a more colourful version for summer ‘downhill mountain biking’ season.
All in all the process was unbelievably swift. I acted on a urge one Friday evening with a basic idea, actually tarting out as SnowJunkies.com. With the help of a few friends on Twitter and some brainstorming on Skype, we came up with SlopeJunki.es after looking at a online reference for all words and slang phrases related to snowboarding.
THE DOMAINS
In choosing the domains, I opted to purchase the following: www.slopejunkies.com, www.slopejunkies.co.uk and the preferred format, www.slopejunki.es. This means that any potential buyer has the most common domains safe and secure and allows them to choose which is the one to use as a primary address.
With the name decided and domains ordered the creation of the logo was next in line.

ZERO POINTS FOR STYLE
I had a basic idea in mind from the start, but which ended up being more than I had bargained for. The usual process in creating logos for me: really messy, just playing with fonts, styles, shapes on my Illustrator canvas. It’s not pretty to watch or look at frankly, but we got there in the end. I used a font that I had purchase just the week before which seemed perfectly suited to the job in hand, Yumi by Neil Summerour, Positype.
Because I could not decided on layout, all looked reasonable to me, I decided to supply the brand with all versions so any potential client could choose what was more appropriate, thus removing the requirement for me to make a decision.

THE END
The end result for me was very pleasing. A relatively simple, stylish, cool and distinctive logomark, with a fresh colour palette. The logo I believe has potential to become a strong logomark due to its simplicity and versatility.
You can see this logo in action at IncSpring, it’s also displayed at LogoPond and has been submitted to Faveup as well.
STATING THE OBVIOUS
For clarification the inspiration began with the shape of the ’s’ which then lead to a natural slope shape. Adding the circle creates a ‘j’ as well as a suggestion of a human figure at top of the slop, all in one logomark.

Very interesting, its always refreshing to be your own boss and your own brief…
I think you did a sweet job on this and I’d be surprised if it isn’t snapped up.

I really like how you turn the s into a slope and then the j. I actually prefer the grey one as the font in the end results is a little hard to read though.
IncSpring seems like an interesting idea.
