Olanzapine (ZYPREXA) - Weight Gain or Weight Loss?
Not sure how much you care about the weight gain issue of Olanzapine? I do, did do and still do and probably will do.
I have been on this drug before and came off it for that very reason.
The long and short of it though, for me anyway, it works, it really
helps me in ways other med’s and combination of meds dont always do.
My consultant said "Weight – evidence suggests that there is some
metabolic effect, but the majority of the effect is due to an increased
appetite and sedation. The increased appetite means more calories in,
and the sedation means less exercise and so fewer calories used, which
means weight gain. You can absolutely prevent weight gain through
exercise and diet. "
I took the bull by it’s horns and choose to try this drug, for me it really works, it works quick and has many other positive advantages.

Simply, Olanzapine DOES not make you put on weight (well, I can’t categorically say that). What it will
possibly do is make you sleepy during the day, which for many people
means less exercise, which means less activity which may mean some
comfort food eating whilst you doze of another day’s worth of life.
Then sure, you’ll put on weight. There is some link to metabolic rate, but again, this can be controlled by being aware of it rather than being a slave to it
If though, like me you are relatively active and determined to not let
the dozeyness side affect overcome you then you have a VERY good chance
of not actually putting weight on, you may even loose weight.
My consultant says for some of his patients, it ‘pushed’ them into
having a more active life, more pro-active in understanding the
illness… which means weight loss. Unless ofcourse you eat more to
compensate for the extra exercise, either you justify it for that ice
cream, or you are actually training for a even where you need more
calories.
Anywho, thanks.

Eli Lilly ZYPREXA LIES!
Zyprexa off label promotion scandal is all over the news now.
Lilly drug reps are alleged to have called their marketing ploy,”Viva zyprexa”.
Eli Lilly zyprexa cost me over $250.00 a month supply out of my own pocket X 4 years and has up to ten times the risk (over non users) of causing diabetes and severe weight gain.
Zyprexa which is only FDA approved for schizophrenia (.5-1% of pop) and some bipolar (2% pop) and then an even smaller percentage of theses two groups.
So how does Zyprexa get to be the 7th largest drug sale in the world?
Eli Lilly is in deep trouble for using their drug reps to ‘encourage’ doctors to write zyprexa for non-FDA approved ‘off label’ uses.
The drug causes increased diabetes risk, and medicare picks up all the expensive fallout. There are now 7 states (and counting) going after Lilly for fraud and restitution.
I was ordered to take it beginning in 1996 for my PTSD for 4 years more,it was useless for my symptoms.Lesson learned…you shouldn’t give a major tranquilizer like zyprexa which makes you ’sleepy’ to a hyper-vigilant patient.
There is a clinical difference between hyper-vigilant and harmful aggression.
Only 9 percent of adult Americans think the pharmaceutical industry can be trusted right around the same rating as big tobacco.
