It could also be 'mark' and 'ID Barbers' as full text.

The latter will be if we think the mark needs some re-enforcement as to what 'ID' means.

The trick here is to make sure the leading letter, in this case the 'i', is the one that creates the letter association. If the 'i' looks too generic and non character like, then this is not good.

So for this reason, this is why I have tried to make the 'i' as clean as possible, and the 'd' carries the burden of acting as both symbol and letter.

If that makes sense...

Once the project is complete, I will definitely do a follow-up post. Charting the changes, the reasons why etc. So could be an interesting comparison.

Or it could be dull.

That was one of my choices also, but I have more on the sketch board that I didn't include above. :) All subtle differences.

Will come down to the final choice of typeface for the word 'barbers' etc.

Yes, you are quite right. The type does look a little off balance, but it is early days and do already have heavier weights reader to send off.

The problem right now is not knowing how it will all come together in terms of signage, dimensions and placement.

Sure it will come together... :)

Is there any chance that after you have finished the logo, you will also share how it would look, how it will be applied to the other collaterals or is it just the logo you were commissioned to do? It would really be a treat to see the logo application. Just a thought. Will be checking in from time to time to see how it progress.

Nice

One other angle it making it like a comb where the D is the handle and I is the clipper.

But maybe you lose even more of the ID lettering this way. I personally dont think it matters too much as the overall impact you want is a mark for use on its own, and mark + barbers.

Graham, the logomark really works well. You did a great job on that. Looking at that with the logotype, I didn't quite feel them working together as well. Almost too much contrast between the pair. You may not agree but I figured I'd throw it out there. Have a great day.

Looks like it's going well - I think in that set of 5 you have there, I like the bottom-left one most - something about the non-symmetrical nature of it

Im hoping it doesn't deviate too much from what you see, i have a good feeling about it as it is. Just some subtle changes etc, then I think we have a 'winner'.

Thanks for kind words, might tell you what that dream was about...

And good on your Client for opting to go down the path with a professional like yourself...she clearly has a sense of style and understands the importance of simple communication. I hope all her marketing materials live the dream.

LOL, the salon door never came up, until now. If people see other associations then thats fine, as long as they are not overtly sexual of course.

The deal here is to make the ID look like the word 'ID', then the associations with comb, clippers etc. So it's a delicate balancing act. And ofcourse, everyone see's these things differently, so there will never be a perfect solution.

The focus is to ensure both I and the client are happy. It's her logo and shop, not mine after all. :)

And given the general poor standard of local barber signage and logos, we sort of have a head start with being noticed anyway.
