portfolio & design blog of logo & identity designer, Graham Smith

And there we have it, or don’t. Doobybrain experienced a fleeting redesign of the Google homepage and more importantly for me, a cleaned up Google logo. So these redesigns were live on ta intanet, but apparently very fleeting and not constant. Seems they are testing this new design
The drop shadow and bevel effects are still there but considerably less obvious. Still would have liked to have seen a completely flat version minus drop shadow and any bevel effects.
New Google search results page and logo via Doobybrain.
This is my attempt at a mock-up, flat and slightly deeper colours. No vintage photoshop effects, still using the same corporate typeface which is Catull BQ. Flat colours and ‘effectless’ gives it an instant refresh. Click the image to see a larger version or visit the Flickr page for a giginourmous version.
New Gmail logo
There is also a similar version mocked-up on Flickr (below), after Google released a new Gmail logo. It’s not quite the same from what I can see, the yellow ‘o’ is more orange on the ‘seen in the wild’ version and is less metallic looking than the one on Flickr.
Just get rid of the gradients and effects all together please.

The flat version of the Google logo looks the best. I really don’t know why they insist to keep those cheap kinda gradients and drop shadows.
Probably have a deep emotional connection to the original logo, but saying that, they clearly don’t mind changing the logo for special occasions and April fools. Doesn’t need a huge change, enough that from a distance, it would barely look like anything has been done. The colour works to keep visual brand connection intack.

New logo looks very good. They must be planning some nice changes to their whole ui as well then.
I much prefer left hand vertical menus and navigation, seems more natural. Ofcourse uses more screen real estate in the process…

would love to see it completely flat with no shadow/bevel for sure. MUCH cleaner!
Lets hope…

The feeling i have for this new logo is – “something” is missing! or should they just exclude the drop shadow ? so how would the favicon would seems to be like? more web 2.0 feel? lol.. Can’t wait to see the final result.
Just needs to be simplified, the photoshop effects are just tacky now, and mixed with this rather traditional serif font, really ages the logo. Flat colour minus any effects does the job i think.

I’m sorry, “the new log looks good?” Really? I think they are both an abomination and one of the reasons their creative director quit one of the poshist jobs there was. This company hates design. They think it’s the devil to their analytics. If you’re saying , “it’s an improvement”, then I agree, but it’s an easy thing to do when you start with such an awful logo. It was their lame attempt to be like ebay and be the goto place of search.
Each to their own ofcourse. But the Google logo does have it’s good points. May not be super trendy and modern, but it is a noticeable brand mark, regardless of its design background. A subtle tweak here and there would bring this more up-to-date than it is currently, without loosing it’s familiarity. Which at the end of the day, can be one of the most important parts of a identity.

somehow my computer at work got stuck with this “new” logo about a month or so ago. Also, google displays search results differently. I didnt like it at first, but now its no different then the google at home.
