Great post, I agree with everythin you've said here, I think it's really important for designers to explain to clients the 'you get what you pay for' side of things. A good logo is incredibly important and as you say many business owners leave their logo to the last minute thinking it can be pulled off for a few bucks and in less than an hour! I really enjoy working with clients who appreciate quality services of a real design professional and are happy to pay for the energy and effort that is required to result in a truly great logo for them.

Great post, Graham. Interesting read as always.

I have a question though - Do you show the client your research and development stuff to help them justify the costs, and help them understand how much work you are putting into the logo?

Or do you ever have a case where the client wants to see the breakdown of the costs VS work involved in some tangible way like that?

This is very helpful. I agree with not undervaluing yourself, at the same time having the gumption to not get overpaid. It really establishes your legibility.

I find it helpful to provide the client with the information that the logo design process is scalable (to a degree) and tell them what the extra cost will get them, and what they will lose if they reduce the budget. This gives them a chance to understand what gives the whole process value.

For smaller projects I often give clients the option of working on a straight hourly rate which allows them to control the process and keeps the 'changes and tweaks' to a minimum. The end result is often better for it, and both parties get well rewarded for the time because we don't have to 'pad' a quote for possible delays.

Great information! I, like a lot of designers, have a big problem establishing a price for logo design. I appreciate everything I can read from more established designers.
