Do you trust me? I trust you!
STUMBLE Me
I am thinking that when we are asked this or we tell someone this, do we actually have any idea what it is we are really saying? Are both parties assuming and thinking about the same thing, to what degree of trust does it imply? how serious or how silly do we take this perception of trust.
Think about it. A girlfriend innocently asks this question, no hidden
agenda, just a regular innocent confirmation. Problem is, what does she
think is asking?
Does it imply, what do you NOT trust in me? Surely, one simple
statement cannot cover all possible ‘vices’ or honest mistakes. I trust
you NOT to have an affair. I trust you NOT to leave toilet seat up. I
trust you in everything you do. Do you trust me in everything I do.
Instead, if you are of a thorough disposition, you may want to rattle
of a list of things that your version of trust encompasses, just so
there is no room for misinterpretation. Instead of a rather vague and
meaningless ‘I trust you’ or ‘do you trust me’.
Personally, it’s a loaded question. And had very real implications,
just as well it’s not a legally binding contract otherwise a lot of
people would be in a heap of trouble.
I hope I am never asked this again. I know that I would have to think about it, which is likely to give totally the wrong signal. Ask me a specific ‘trust’ scenario and I am more likely to be able to answer honestly.
